Gravel Biking Routes

Check out a few of our favourite routes to explore by gravel bike.

Maki Road to Red Rock

36.5 kms with 419m elevation gain from the start of Maki Road and back. A nice gravel climb followed by a gravel descent into Red Rock, take it easy on the descent as there is loose gravel and some sharp corners. A good out and back, depending on the time of year and conditions you will find a nice swim or ice caves at the end of your ride. Turn left at the bottom of the hill and follow the road until you see an entrance on the right at the very end onto a voyager trail, this will take you down to the shore line. Climb back over to the Sault and don’t forget to wave at the Maki mannequin on your way past!

Connor Road plus Logging Roads to Highway 556

64.8 kms with 781m elevation gain from the 2nd Line/Old Garden River Road intersection.

A challenging route that starts with a burly ride on Connor Road and gives way to a well established logging road that will take you down to the highway. Lots of lake views and stops along the way, Crystal Lake is worth the short detour for those who have not been before for a snack stop and a swim to cool off. Come back along the 556 and extend the ride by taking the Bellevue Valley descent and climbing back up Highway 552 before joining Highway 17. Cut back in on 6th line and weave through Hiawatha for a pleasant return to the city.

Old Goulais Bay Road with optional Old Goulais Mission extension

90kms with 646m elevation gain from the start of Old Goulais Bay Road to the 2nd line/Old Garden River Road intersection (including the extension)

55.8kms with 504m elevation gain from the start of Old Goulais Bay Road to the 2nd Line/Old Garden River Road intersection (without the extension)

A nice gravel climb out of town with a flat top section (keep a look out for a small detour off to the right with a good view) with a challenging descent down into Goulais. Cross the river and take a right if you are looking for the extra kilometres to get to Old Goulais Mission, there is a chip truck here which is well worth taking advantage of if they are open (check Facebook for opening hours, cash or e-transfer only for payment). Turn right if not taking the extension or retrace your steps from Goulais Mission and stay on Highway 552 until it meets the 556 and turn right to rejoin Highway 17 and turn off at 6th line for the nicest way back to the City.
