Road Ride

This week’s road ride will move out to Richard’s Landing on St. Joe’s Island. We’ll meet at the lighthouse in Richard’s landing for seven.

Per an interesting request, the A and B rides will follow the same route every week with three weeks of sprint regroups in different locations followed by the forth week as a self timed event. This week we’ll have three sprints:

Sprint 1 will be on Gilbertson Hill from the left on 548 to the next left on 548.

Sprint 2 will be on Hilton Rd. from 10th Line to 20th Line.

Sprint 3 will be up Gawas Bay hill from F&G Line to the Sportsman’s Storage sign at the top of the hill.

The C ride is planned for a 21km loop that can be expanded quite a bit at the end depending on how our legs are feeling and how much we love hills.

Women’s Road Rides

Hey, Ladies,

I’ll be running some beginner friendly women’s road rides every Tuesday in August (and maybe into September if there is interest). We’ll meet at the McMeeken Arena to roll out at 7pm each Tuesday. I will keep the routes to 20-25km and we should expect to be out for 1-1:30 hours. Some of the same roads will be used on these rides, but I promise a different route each week.

These will be social, no drop rides with a little bit of skill training thrown in. Come on out and meet some like-minded women.

Merckx Time Trial

For our last ride in Echo Bay we will meet at the school for 7 as we have been and ride out neutral to our starting line, there will be some gravel on the roll out.

The race will be an 18km loop: Watson to a right on Cemetery Rd; it will then be another right onto Bar River Rd; another right onto Government Rd and another right onto Watson Rd brings you back to the starting point. The A-B groups will ride two loops and the C group one loop. Please remember the route as you may be riding it alone.

This is a Merckx Time Trial, which is a time trial in which you can’t use time trial equipment (TT bikes, aero bars, aero helmets). Remember to obey traffic signs.

The Whole Enchilada – 2019

The Whole Enchilada is back for a return engagement!

Do you find yourself always riding the same trails at Hiawatha?  Do you know where Swoop, Stickman Drive and Drop Ahead are?  The Whole Enchilada is a series of rides to get people out to see and ride (with maybe a little walking) the entire Hiawatha trail system.

This is a mountain bike ride for beginners and intermediates.  The only qualification is the ability to ride about 10 km in an evening.  No one will be left behind.  You may not ride every section of trail, but you will see it all, so that you can aspire to riding it all!

The plan will be to do the Pinder on one night, the Crystal on one night and to spread the Red Pine over two nights.  My goal is to help as many people as possible complete the Whole Enchilada before the snow flies.  To that end there will be multiple opportunities to complete each portion of the ride.

Scheduling will be a bit fluid as I try to schedule around home and work activities, but my aim is to have at lease four ride nights in August and 4 in September.   Depending on the level of interest, we will have repeat nights (e.g., if you missed the Pinder night, we could do a make up night later) and can do some weekend rides.

We will track our progress using the official 2019 Hiawatha Trail Passport.

Success will be measured by how many riders can say “I rode the Whole Enchilada!” at the end of the season.  Upon completion of your Trail Passport you will be awarded an official Sault Cycling Club 2019 Whole Enchilada adhesive medal (great for proudly displaying on your bike’s top tube).

Nightly Distance: 8-10 km

Bike Suggestions: Mountain bike or fat bike, helmets are mandatory

Supplies: hydration and snacks

Scheduling: approx. 1/week, first night Tuesday July 30, gather at 6:30 by the pump track in Kinsmen Park (look for the Sault Cycling Club banner).

I will set up Facebook Events for the rides and would appreciate if you indicate your interest there, so I know how many to expect each night.

This ride is open to all, but if you are not a member of the Sault Cycling Club you will have to complete a waiver prior to riding.

Road Ride for July 24

We’ll still be meeting at the school in Echo Bay at 7PM.

The A-B ride will consist of more sprint regroups as it goes through a reverse course from last week. The first sprint will be on gravel (very well-packed, road bike friendly) from the turn onto Lakeview Rd until the intersection of Riverside Dr. The second sprint is up Laird hill from the turn onto Government Rd until you get to the green, government mailbox. The third sprint will be up the Fords Rd hill starting at the turn onto Fords Rd from Bar River Rd. (I’m still researching a good landmark to end this one at, if anybody has any suggestions.

My C ride will be a reverse of last week’s loop.
