What a storm!

Hey friends! What a storm last night eh!? If you’re heading out for a ride at Hiawatha or anywhere really, PLEASE be very careful as there may be new washouts and hazards due to the extreme rain overnight. Some bridges have been affected. We haven’t been out to assess but have seen pictures and heard from others that some damage is out there. Please let us know if you find anything that should be addressed! Stay safe and have fun out there!!

Overnight tour, August 24-25th

Attention SCC Members, there will be an overnight bikepacking adventure on August 24 & 25.

This is a self support ride (food, shelter, clothes, your guide will bring a water filtration pump) if you require gear please let us know and we’ll try and help you out.  We will depart from Hiawatha around 9:30am (meet around 9am), the fun starts when we hit the Ranger Lake Hwy; there we can refill our water bottles at a spring and start kicking up dust on the gravel. After a short bit we will turn off the Ranger Lake Hwy and head south towards Carpenter Lake (this road is gravel, jeep tracks, loose rocks, and some ups and downs), somewhere between the turnoff and the lake we can stop for the overnighter; this will not be a fast ride due to terrain and the philosophy of these rides.  The next day we will cycle towards SSM via Hwy 638 and some sides roads, just to make things interesting.  The plan is to return Sunday early afternoon.

Bike Lanes at City Council on Monday

If you’ve been following our cities plans on bike lanes, you may have seen that the proposed lanes on Pine Street and Willow Ave have hit some friction and have been delayed. The issue will be brought up to City Council once more on Monday July 15th, at 4:30pm at City Hall, and some members of the club will be making a brief presentation on the issue. Please come out and show your support! These lanes can make cycling in our city much safer!

If you’d like to read more about why these lanes are so important, or how they can be a net improvement to the neighbourhood even to those who primarily drive, Check out Andre Riopel’s online petition at https://www.change.org/p/sault-ste-marie-city-council-support-bike-lanes-on-pine-and-willow where he both supports these lanes, and does a great job explaining the issues around them.
